How Much Should You Risk Per Operation?

Learn how to size your arbitrage positions, manage capital exposure, and establish practical limits that help protect your bankroll.

01

Understanding Exposure
Per Operation

In sports arbitrage, your total stake is the combined amount placed across all outcomes of an event. Although a correctly executed arbitrage may produce a positive theoretical return, the capital involved remains exposed to operational and settlement risks.

Your exposure per operation is therefore different from the profit you expect to earn.

Practical Example

Total Bankroll $5,000
Total Stakes $250
Exposure 5%

A $250 arbitrage operation represents 5% of a $5,000 bankroll, even when its expected profit is much smaller.

02

Setting a Maximum
Exposure Limit

An exposure limit establishes the maximum portion of your bankroll that you are willing to commit to a single operation.

A smaller limit may reduce the impact of a failed operation, while a larger limit concentrates more capital in one event. There is no universally safe percentage.

Set your limit before finding opportunities. Do not increase it impulsively because an apparent arbitrage return looks attractive.

Calculate Your Stakes
Before Betting

Both stakes must be calculated together. Consider a two-outcome market with decimal odds of 2.10 and 2.05.

If the outcomes cover every relevant result and settlement rules are compatible, the stakes can be distributed to target approximately equal payouts.

Always verify odds, minimum and maximum stakes, market rules, and available balances before placing the first bet.

Example — $200 Total Stake

Outcome A — odds 2.10 $98.80
Outcome B — odds 2.05 $101.20
Approximate Payout $207.48
Approximate Theoretical Profit $7.48

Before fees, rounding, taxes, execution differences, and settlement risks.

Interactive Stake &
Exposure Calculator

Simulate an operation before committing capital. This calculator lets you change your bankroll, maximum exposure percentage, and the odds of both outcomes.

1
Enter your total bankroll Use the capital designated for arbitrage operations.
2
Choose your maximum exposure The calculator limits the total stake to this percentage.
3
Enter both decimal odds Review the calculated stakes, payout, and theoretical profit.

Total Exposure $250.00
Stake — Outcome A $123.49
Stake — Outcome B $126.51
Theoretical Profit $7.48
Positive theoretical margin, assuming complete outcome coverage, compatible settlement rules, and acceptance of both stakes.

05

Managing Multiple
Open Operations

Several small operations can collectively commit a substantial portion of your bankroll. Track the combined value of unsettled bets, funds needed to complete pending operations, and capital still available.

Establish a separate limit for total simultaneous exposure, not just individual operations.

Example: Three Simultaneous Operations

Operation 1 $200
Operation 2 $150
Operation 3 $250
Total Committed $600 (12%)

Based on a $5,000 bankroll. Committed capital is not necessarily the amount that would be lost if an issue occurs.

06

Pre-Operation
Risk Checklist

A disciplined decision starts before the first bet. Use this checklist to verify exposure limits, available balances, stake calculations, market compatibility, and simultaneous exposure.

Completing a checklist does not eliminate risk. If any condition cannot be verified, consider skipping the operation.
